We do multiple things at once, allow ourselves to be distracted by external triggers, start things and do not finish them, and so on. To get out of this cluttered way of doing things, we direct our full conscious attention to what is called the ‘working plane’. Because attention is one-pointed, this concerns only one activity, and we stop everything else. The ‘working plane’ is the point in our action where something is happening.

A good example of attention on the working plane is this: you are walking up or down a staircase with a tray full of filled wine glasses. The working plane is located where something is happening: the feet that walk the steps. Therefore, the point of attention is not, or only very partially, the tray. You walk the stairs with full attention, yet without influencing the intelligence of your Moving Center. This is only possible with a conscious quiet mind. As soon as thinking starts to interfere, walking the stairs might even become more unstable. Having attention on the working plane therefore does not mean that you start to ‘interfere’ with it in an improper way.

Stopping multitasking is not easy in this day and age where attention is competed for and we are conditioned to do multiple things simultaneously. It is one of the most difficult exercises to perform purely. Therefore, practice this exercise first during simple tasks. But once you get used to this, everything you do gains more quality and you waste less subtle energy.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”witegel” _builder_version=”4.16″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” custom_padding=”3%|3%|3%|3%” use_border_color=”off” border_color=”#000000″ border_style=”solid” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Luister naar je eigen stem” _builder_version=”4.27.9″ background_color=”#faeede” background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” custom_margin=”|20px||20px” custom_padding=”3%|3%|3%|3%” border_width_all=”3px” border_color_all=”#dcb385″ use_border_color=”on” saved_tabs=”advanced,css” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Listen to your own voice

Listening to your own voice while you are in conversation with someone helps you to remain in self-remembrance.

You perceive the sound of your own voice in the same way that you can perceive the sound of the other person. The Socratic dialogue is a good example of this. In it, things may get ‘intense’, playing the ball and not the man, but it should not degenerate into a pointless discussion.

Etymologically, the word discussion originates from the Latin discussere (to investigate, to smash apart – composed of dis- (apart) and quatere (to strike/shake). Originally aimed at ‘shaking apart’ a subject to get to the heart of the matter. A reasoned exchange of thoughts, in other words. Today, however, it is more of a battle to ‘win’ than a difference of opinion.

A good way to prevent a pointless discussion is paraphrasing. Once the other person has spoken – and before you speak again – you first repeat in your own words what they have said. The way people speak in society changes over the years. As a result, we often adopt clichés and use them without realizing it. These are words and expressions whose original power or intention has been lost. They often sound trite or have turned into conversation stoppers, filler words, and platitudes. And just as quickly as they appear, they also disappear again.
Such language distances us from ourselves and hinders genuine connection with others. In conversations, it ensures that we are not fully present or that we come across as uninterested. Consequently, interaction remains superficial. Many filler words carry barely any meaning.

Take, for instance, the frequently used greeting, “All good?”. This is virtually impossible to answer honestly. A standard response like “Couldn’t be better” sounds polite, but is rarely sincere. Other common examples are words like “actually”, “just”, and “so to speak”, which are pasted into sentences without reflection. The word ‘challenge’ is often used instead of ‘problem’. This euphemism seems softening, but suppresses the feeling that goes with it.
Trendy buzzwords disappear just as fast. By now, phrases like “you know” and “a bit of” before a noun (such as “a bit of awareness”) have largely faded away.

Recognizing and avoiding these clichés helps you communicate more consciously and powerfully. By keeping them out of conversations, more insight, engagement, and self-reflection arise. This in turn leads to clearer and more direct communication, strengthening both your eloquence and your connection with others. This clarity is rare in daily exchanges between people. Important examples of this can be mentioned: you wind yourself up, you hurry yourself, you show off, you feel ashamed, you overexert yourself, and so forth.

However, we often tend to place the blame for annoyance, for example, on someone else. Unjustly so, because we do this ourselves. We ourselves are the cause of such discomfort. No one else is responsible for that. You cannot shift this unpleasant feeling onto another person. So be alert to reflexive verbs and ask yourself: Is this useful to me? Or – again reflexively – am I burdening myself?
